From Bullied Betty to Book Cover Beauty: Young Girl Proves It Does Get Better
by J. L. Michaels
It is no secret that school can be difficult. While those
pesky little hormones swimming around in blood are raging and causing all kinds
of challenges, students have no choice but to find a way to navigate a rather
complex minefield of pressures. Then there is the added demand of balancing
time between family, friends, studies and extracurricular activities. It is no
wonder that many students feel overwhelmed.
For some, the situation is even worse. School becomes a
painful experience that results in long-lasting emotional and psychological
damage. Such is often the case when the individual is the target of bullying.
And that is exactly what happened to the young woman who now
graces the cover of the newly released suspense novel Roller Skate Skinny. Jess
was not only placed on the “ugliest girls” list in school but she also received
viciously cruel messages and even threats via social media. For a period of
time in her life, Jess was hit with constant insults and harassment. It reached
the point where it was not uncommon for Jess to soak her pillow with tears at
night.
The good news is that Jess turned the situation around. In
an effort to prove a point that the “bullies” were targeting Jess out of envy,
Jess’s mother submitted photos to modeling agency, and it was not long before
Jess was offered a contract. Presently, Jess is completing her graduate degree
at Nova Southeastern University and resides at the top of her class.
In a YouTube video review of 13 Reasons Why, Jess and her
father took time to talk about the days Jess was bullied by in school and how the
young woman found a way to overcome the past. Jess openly explains the importance
of having a support system and how “it does get better.”
Now Jess graces the cover of a suspense novel. Although
Roller Skate Skinny is not about school bullying, the book does touch upon some
hot topics, too include mental illness, violence, and the ability to consent.
As the author of Roller Skate Skinny, I believe that it is
not only in the confines of the mind that madness takes hold but quite often
victimhood. You have to fight against the lies and the cruelty, the negativity,
and replace it with self-belief in order to break free of its grip. If you have
experienced violence, bullying or something else, please reach out to others.
And if you do not have anyone, then please consider an online support group to
help get you through difficult times.
